Take Homes from PV2 by Rob Kaiser

robkaisered-page001Rob Kaiser is the founder and owner of Deliberate Living Systems, LLC. He lives in Ohio and organizes the Medina Permaculture Meetup. His goal is to work with others to share the knowledge and skills needed to live a healthy, positive and beneficial life. Here he shares his thoughts after attending the Permaculture Voices 2 conference in San Diego, California.

Permaculture Voices is a yearly conference that brings together professional permaculture designers and teachers together to develop stronger networks and more resilient livelihoods. Permaculture Voices 2 was held held from March 4-8, 2015. The conference came and went…almost in an instant.

By the time I returned home, I began to get caught up in my day job again…and before I knew it – a couple of weeks had already passed and it was the end of March! Even after a few weeks – I found myself still trying to get caught up on conference notes…

During each conference session I attended, I furiously took notes. Notes were also taken during meals with mentors, friends, and new connections. Why the delay in writing this article? While I believe sharing permaculture with others is *incredibly* valuable…it’s also worth noting that we have nothing to share unless we are actively *doing* things that incorporate Permaculture into our lives.

The big take away for me was DOING.  So many of us spend time thinking, reading, and talking about the things we’re learning and how we’re planning on doing. Far fewer of us actually *DO* many of the things we dream about.

Around the same time I began planning on attending the first Permaculture Voices Conference (PV1) I read a book by Jon Acuff called “Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters.” Part of reading that book led to involvement in another community of like-minded entrepreneurs called “Dreamers and Builders.”

Dreaming is one thing, *Building* is another. The big take away from PV2 was taking action, building, and executing on the dreams that come as a result of Permaculture. There is an old saying about planting trees, “The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago…the second best time is now.”

We need to treat our ideas and our permaculture ideas like the planting of trees. The time is NOW to begin executing and building our dreams. There is no room for excuses. The resources are readily available for us to capitalize on them and actively work to create the change we wish to see in the world. Communities such as the Great Lakes Permaculture Portal and Medina Permaculture Meetup assist us with effectively overcoming our challenges including sourcing knowledge, confidence and materials.

If you have any specific questions about the conference after reading the conference details here, you can read the series of articles written by Tigre Gánamoose Pickett of Ecology Artisans in San Diego. The way that he summarized the conference on the Ecology Artisans blog here was *much* better than I could have done.

There is so much more to share with regard to the epic experiences that were had at PV2, but alas…there is only so much time in the day.  Begin creating your own epic experiences and share those with others. Begin building your dreams. The time is NOW.

Focus on what you can do and do it well.  Find those who are better at certain tasks than you and connect with them. When we try to do everything ourselves, we are often times less successful than we would be if we worked within our community. Build your community and make it stronger. Contribute what you can and help others reach their fullest potential. Start building those dreams.

The time is NOW.  Here’s to building an #EPIC2015 and creating the change we wish to see in the world!
